Black Bear Hunting in Northwestern Ontario

Remote, guided hunts for one of North America’s most sought-after big game animals.

Black bear hunting is one of the most exciting and unpredictable big game experiences in North America.

At Hanson’s Hideaway Lodge, we offer remote, low-pressure hunts designed for hunters who want more than just an opportunity, they want a true Northwestern Ontario experience. Black bears are intelligent, elusive, and highly adaptable, making every encounter earned.

Whether you’re pursuing your first bear or chasing a mature trophy, this is a hunt that demands patience, awareness, and respect for the animal.

A Proven Trophy Black Bear Hunting Experience

We hunt across three large, exclusive Bear Management Areas, accessible only through our operation.

  • No outside hunting pressure

  • Long-established, proven bait sites

  • Generational knowledge of bear movement and patterns

Bears have exceptional memory and will return to reliable food sources year after year. Many of our bait sites have been maintained and refined over decades, giving hunters access to consistent, high-quality opportunities.

We have harvested bears over 500 lbs, with an average around 225 lbs, including chest patch and colour-phase bears.

Prepared, Ethical, and Effective Hunts

Preparation is everything in bear hunting.

We begin baiting stands up to a month before your arrival, ensuring active sites and consistent bear movement.

Hunting is done from:

  • Elevated tree stands

  • Over baited 55-gallon barrel sites

While baiting increases your chances, it is never a guarantee. Most hunters will see multiple bears during their trip, but selecting the right animal and making the shot is part of the experience.

Prime Black Bear Habitat in Northwestern Ontario

The forests surrounding Crow Lake and Lake of the Woods provide exceptional natural food sources, including:

  • Berries and grasses

  • Small game and birds

  • Aquatic life

  • Wild rice and acorns

This abundance attracts and sustains a healthy bear population, including migrating bears that move into the area to feed and prepare for winter.

Flexible Hunts for All Skill Levels

We offer a limited number of both:

  • Non-resident Ontario black bear hunts

  • Resident Ontario hunts

Hunting methods include:

  • Archery

  • Rifle

  • Black powder

Most hunting takes place in the afternoon and evening, leaving time during the day to enjoy fishing or relax at the lodge.

Each hunt also includes access to a boat and motor, so you can fish when you’re not in the stand.
